That to me is a very pessimistic place,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.georgetown.edu\/mo-elleithee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mo Elleithee,<\/a> the executive director of Georgetown University\u2019s Institute of Politics and Public Service.<\/p>\n<p>And worse, he said in announcing the results of the institute\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.georgetown.edu\/october-2019-civility-poll-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Battleground Poll,<\/a> the political division is likely to make the upcoming 2020 presidential race the nastiest in modern history.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting findings that show voters angered with compromise and growing unfavorable ratings of President Trump and most 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, he said the poll \u201cpaints a scenario, a picture of a highly negative campaign that will continue to exacerbate the incivility in our public discourse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIt will be a sort of race to the bottom, or has the potential to be a race to the bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Civility Poll is an offshoot of the famous bipartisan Battleground Poll conducted by Democratic pollster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeresearch.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=2&amp;Itemid=150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Celinda Lake<\/a> of Lake Research Partners and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarrance.com\/team\/edgoeas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Goeas<\/a> of the Tarrance Group.<\/p>\n<p>While it found that 87% are frustrated with the rudeness in politics today, it also revealed that the public really isn\u2019t interested in traditional compromise. For example, a nearly equal 84% said that they are \u201ctired of leaders compromising [their] values and ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elleithee explained, \u201cIt seems to me what they\u2019re saying is, \u2018I believe in common ground, it\u2019s just that common ground is where I\u2019m standing. As soon you move over to where I am, we\u2019ll be on common ground.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goeas pointed to the poor favorable ratings of presidential candidates and said that 2020 may be a rare race between candidates that less than half the country likes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is going to be a large body of voters who dislike both of them, and that\u2019s going to be the swing vote in the election, which means it dictates the kind of campaign that\u2019s run,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"TweetEmbed\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Lake agreed that national division is widening. \u201cThere is <\/span>relative<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> consensus that divisions in this country are getting worse,\u201d she said in her memo accompanying the survey released Tuesday.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Both pollsters noted that the public blames social media, the news media, and Trump for the growing division.<\/p>\n<p>But Goeas, not a fan of the president, said he believes that Trump didn\u2019t start the rudeness in today\u2019s politics. \u201cHe is a symptom of where we are, not \u2018the\u2019 disease,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cOne of the things that I have focused on as we have gone into this death spiral of incivility in the country, that we had to be at a certain point for Trump to become acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll backs that up.
