ROME \u2014 Pope Francis has formally approved allowing priests to bless same-sex couples, with a new document explaining a radical change in Vatican policy by insisting that people seeking God\u2019s love and mercy shouldn\u2019t be subject to \u201can exhaustive moral analysis\u201d to receive it.<\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The document from the Vatican\u2019s doctrine office, released Monday, elaborates on a letter Francis\u00a0sent to two conservative cardinals\u00a0that was published in October.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

In that preliminary response, Francis suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if they didn\u2019t confuse the ritual with the sacrament of marriage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new document repeats that rationale and elaborates on it, reaffirming that marriage is a lifelong sacrament between a man and a woman.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

And it stresses that blessings should not be conferred at the same time as\u00a0a civil union, using set rituals or even with the clothing and gestures that belong in a wedding.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

But it says requests for such blessings should not be denied full stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It offers an extensive definition of the term \u201cblessing\u201d in Scripture to insist that people seeking a transcendent relationship with God and looking for his love and mercy should not be subject to \u201can exhaustive moral analysis\u201d as a precondition for receiving it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, a blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in God,\u201d the document said. \u201cThe request for a blessing, thus, expresses and nurtures openness to the transcendence, mercy, and closeness to God in a thousand concrete circumstances of life, which is no small thing in the world in which we live.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt is a seed of the Holy Spirit that must be nurtured, not hindered.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
