President Joe Biden\u2019s repeated pledges that the United States would come to\u00a0Taiwan\u2019s defense in the case of a Chinese attack\u2014only for White House officials to walk back on his statements each time\u2014gives off the impression to America\u2019s adversaries that the Biden administration \u201cdoesn\u2019t have its act together,\u201d said one analyst.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

On May 23, Biden said that Washington had a \u201ccommitment\u201d to militarily defend Taiwan from invasion\u2014breaking from the United States\u2019 long-standing policy of strategic deterrence under which the administration is deliberately vague on what it would do in such a scenario. This is the third time he has made such a statement since August 2021. Each time, administration officials confirmed later that U.S. policy had not changed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt does create this appearance of confusion,\u201d Grant Newsham, a senior fellow with the Center for Security Policy, recently told Epoch TV\u2019s \u201cChina Insider\u201d program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt does not create the appearance of an administration that really knows what it\u2019s doing, or has its policy set,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chinese regime considers self-ruled Taiwan to be part of its territory to be taken by force, if necessary. The United States, meanwhile, is Taiwan\u2019s largest arms supplier and is bound to provide the island with the means to defend itself under the Taiwan Relations Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n

James Fannell, a former director of intelligence and information operations for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, agreed, saying that Washington appears to want to have it both ways.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNow this Biden administration seems to be trying to edge towards saying that we\u2019re going to be more clear about our position on Taiwan, but they don\u2019t want to give up saying that they\u2019re done with the policy of\u00a0strategic ambiguity<\/a>,\u201d he told China Insider.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet this approach is \u201cvery dangerous,\u201d Fannell added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re facing an adversary, who everyday\u2019s showing teeth, they\u2019re showing their arms, they\u2019re showing the military, and they\u2019re using the threats that they will use violence, to get what they want,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fannell referred to China and Russia\u2019s recent\u00a0joint air force drills\u00a0<\/a>in the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the western Pacific as leaders of the Quad grouping\u2014Australia, Japan, United States, and India\u2014met in Tokyo. The exercise, he said, was to send a strategic warning to the Quad, particularly Japan and the United States\u2014those who could get involved with defending Taiwan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The White House did not return a request for comment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shifting Away From Strategic Ambiguity<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Given this backdrop, both experts urged that the United States should move away from its policy of strategic ambiguity towards Taiwan, and reinforce its support to help the island counter the regime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fanell pointed out that the Chinese regime no longer sticks to terms stipulated in Taiwan Relations Act, the legislation passed by the U.S. lawmakers back in 1979, which state that in exchange for the United States diplomatically recognizing the People\u2019s Republic of China, the Taiwan issue has to be resolved peacefully.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s China that\u2019s walked away from the agreements. And so we shouldn\u2019t feel beholden to a policy of strategic ambiguity that was built 50 years ago when everything\u2019s changed on the ground,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newsham echoed Fanell\u2019s view, saying \u201cChina has long since made it clear that they are going for a violent resolution if they have to. It makes everything else inoperable in this agreement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fanell emphasized that the United States should ramp up enhancing the island nation\u2019s military capabilities by \u201carming it to the teeth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t do that, the images that we\u2019re seeing in Ukraine: dead babies, murdered women, and burned-out buildings and destruction, all of that will occur in Taiwan,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n
