The Department of Justice\u2019s (DOJ) inspector general on Tuesday found that a former senior\u00a0FBI\u00a0official repeatedly violated the bureau\u2019s policy by having unauthorized contact with the media.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The inspector general\u2019s office, according to the report, said the unnamed official had \u201creceived items of value from members of the media\u201d and had \u201cnumerous unauthorized contacts with the media\u201d between 2014 and 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Describing the behavior as a violation of the FBI\u2019s policy, the report said the FBI official had \u201cunauthorized social engagements outside of FBI Headquarters involving drinks, lunches, and dinners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The official also accepted tickets from media members to two black-tie dinner events, including one valued at $300 and the other at $225. They also received transportation to the event from a reporter, who was not named, the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen later contacted by the [inspector general\u2019s office] for a voluntary interview, the Senior FBI Official declined to be interviewed,\u201d the office wrote, adding that it indeed has \u201cthe authority to compel testimony from current Department employees upon informing them that their statements will not be used to incriminate them in a criminal proceeding.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the office \u201cdoes not have the authority to compel or subpoena testimony from former Department employees, including those who retire or resign during\u201d the course of the investigation, the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the inspector general\u2019s report released Tuesday provided scant details, the findings are sure to bolster claims that some FBI and other U.S. intelligence officials have developed a cozy relationship with members of the media in recent years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2019, former top FBI press officer Michael Kortan received baseball tickets from a CNN reporter in 2016 and also allegedly lied to investigators, according to a\u00a0report from the DOJ<\/a>. Kortan, who resigned in 2018, had \u201clacked candor under oath when he provided answers to OIG\u2019s questions relating to the September 2016 tickets that were misleading and false,\u201d the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Former President Donald Trump and his allies have long alleged the FBI has colluded with mainstream media outlets by leaking sensitive information to them on a variety of issues, including claims that Trump\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia or regarding allegations surrounding President Joe Biden\u2019s son Hunter\u2019s overseas business dealings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In late December,\u00a0Trump accused<\/a>\u00a0the DOJ, FBI, and legacy media of covering up an investigation into Hunter Biden\u2019s tax problems because they wanted to protect then-candidate Joe Biden.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And during the previous December, the inspector general\u2019s office found the FBI committed at least\u00a017 errors or omissions<\/a>\u00a0when it opened and renewed the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)-backed surveillance of former Trump aide Carter Page starting in 2016. Michael Horowitz, the agency\u2019s inspector general, said \u201cdecision-makers\u201d at the FBI should have been \u201cgiven complete and accurate information so that they could meaningfully evaluate probable cause before authorizing the surveillance\u201d of an American associated with a presidential campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n
