Health and Human Services (HHS<\/a>) Secretary Xavier Becerra argued that the federal government is entitled to know who has been vaccinated against COVID-19, responding to concerns over a recently announced White House plan to send teams door-to-door.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps we should point out that the federal government has had to spend trillions of dollars to try to keep Americans alive during this pandemic, so it is absolutely the government\u2019s business. It is taxpayers\u2019 business if we have to continue to spend money to try to keep people from contracting COVID and helping reopen the economy,\u201d Becerra told CNN on Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Becerra claimed that \u201cknocking on a door has never been against the law\u201d and \u201cyou don\u2019t have to answer, but we hope you do.\u201d He added, \u201cBecause if you haven\u2019t been vaccinated, we can help dispel some of those rumors you\u2019ve heard and hopefully get you vaccinated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a later tweet<\/a>, Becerra said his comments to CNN were taken \u201cwildly out of context.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTo be clear: government has no database tracking who is vaccinated,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cWe\u2019re encouraging people to step up to protect themselves, others by getting vaccinated. It\u2019s the best way to save lives and end this pandemic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this week, President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0and White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced a plan to send teams door-to-door to provide information about vaccines in areas with relatively low vaccination rates.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The president\u00a0pledged to \u201cgo community by community \u2026 and oftentimes door to door, literally knocking on doors\u201d in an effort to get people vaccinated. This drew anger from Republican lawmakers, who argued that the government doesn\u2019t have the right to know who is or isn\u2019t vaccinated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHow about don\u2019t knock on my door. You\u2019re not my parents. You\u2019re the government. Make the vaccine available, and let people be free to choose. Why is that concept so hard for the left?\u201d Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) wrote on Twitter.\u00a0\u201cIn 2021, the nine most terrifying words in the English language: \u2018I\u2019m from the government, have you been vaccinated yet?\u2019\u201d wrote Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other Republicans made even worse predictions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDoor to door to vaccinate Americans this year\u2026 door to door to confiscate guns next year?\u201d asked Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) on Twitter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both Biden and Psaki, during their respective press conferences Tuesday, provided few details about the door-to-door outreach program. It\u2019s not clear when the program will start, if the outreach teams will ask questions, or how long it will last.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The plan is part of the government\u2019s COVID-19 response after the White House fell short of its self-imposed July 4 deadline to get 70 percent of American adults at least one vaccination shot. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 67 percent of American adults have received at least one shot, and more than 157 million people are fully vaccinated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

COVID-19 vaccines have become a flashpoint in the current culture wars.\u00a0Some have argued<\/a>\u00a0that vaccine passport-type systems would imperil civil liberties and violate the landmark 1996\u00a0Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA.<\/strong><\/p>\n
