Several counties in Oregon on May 18 voted to consider joining the state of Idaho, which is part of a long-shot movement to break away from the state that has long been dominated by politicians in Portland.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Voters in Malheur, Sherman, Grant, Baker, and Lake counties approved various measures that require county officials to take steps to look into moving the Idaho border west to incorporate the counties.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The grassroots group Move Oregon\u2019s Border for a Greater Idaho is aiming to have the eastern counties\u2014which are mostly rural\u2014join Idaho because they believe they would be better off with Idaho\u2019s more conservative political leadership.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThis election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon,\u201d lead petitioner Mike McCarter said in a statement to local media outlets on May 18. \u201cIf Oregon really believes in liberal values such as self-determination, the Legislature won\u2019t hold our counties captive against our will. If we\u2019re allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

McCarter told the Oregonian<\/b><\/p>\n

last year that the bid to join Idaho is more of a \u201clifestyle\/values judgment\u201d\u00a0that separates rural and\u00a0urban residents.<\/b><\/p>\n

Oregon\u2019s Jefferson and Union counties already approved measures\u00a0last year to promote a move\u00a0to Idaho. Move Oregon\u2019s Border for a Greater Idaho petitioners also want to absorb some counties in Northern California, which are also mostly rural.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Idaho Gov. Brad Little, a Republican, told Fox News last year that some Oregonians are \u201clooking at Idaho fondly because of our regulatory atmosphere\u201d and \u201cour values.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The bid, however, appears to be a long shot as it would require a formal vote in the Democratic-controlled Oregon legislature. If that goes through, Oregon and Idaho would have to come up with a deal, which would then have to be ratified by the U.S. Congress.<\/b><\/p>\n

Throughout the history of the United States, changing state lines has been a rare occurrence\u2014 all taking place before the 20th century. In 1792, Kentucky was created from Virginia\u2019s territory, Maine was created from Massachusetts in 1820, and West Virginia in 1863 was admitted\u00a0into the United States when Union states and\u00a0counties separated themselves\u00a0from the Confederate\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Voters in Oregon\u2019s Harney and Douglas counties will hold a vote on similar measures in upcoming\u00a0elections.<\/b><\/p>\n

McCarter told media outlets that Idaho state Reps. Barbara Ehardt and Judy Boyle, both Republicans,\u00a0are planning to introduce a bill about a possible relocation of the Idaho\u2013Oregon border\u00a0in January 2022<\/b><\/p>\n
