Bush: All religions pray to ‘same God’

‘That’s what I believe. I believe Islam is a great religion that preaches peace’

“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”—2 Thessalonians 5:3

“And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.”
—Jeremiah 9:3

President George Bush has repeated his belief all religions, “whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God” – an assertion that caused outrage among evangelical leaders when he said it in November 2003.

Bush made the statement Friday in an interview with Al Arabiya reporter Elie Nakouzi.

Al Arabiya is Al Jazeerah’s top competitor in the Mideast.

As the president and Nakouzi walked from the Oval Office to the Map Room in the White House residence, Nazouki asked, “But I want to tell you – and I hope this doesn’t bother you at all – that in the Islamic world they think that President Bush is an enemy of Islam – that he wants to destroy their religion, what they believe in. Is that in any way true, Mr. President?”

“No, it’s not,” said Bush. “I’ve heard that, and it just shows [sic] to show a couple of things: One, that the radicals have done a good job of propagandizing. In other words, they’ve spread the word that this really isn’t peaceful people versus radical people or terrorists, this is really about the America not liking Islam.

“Well, first of all, I believe in an Almighty God, and I believe that all the world, whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God. That’s what I believe. I believe that Islam is a great religion that preaches peace. And I believe people who murder the innocent to achieve political objectives aren’t religious people, whether they be a Christian who does that – we had a person blow up our – blow up a federal building in Oklahoma City who professed to be a Christian, but that’s not a Christian act to kill innocent people.

“And I just simply don’t subscribe to the idea that murdering innocent men, women and children – particularly Muslim men, women and children in the Middle East – is an act of somebody who is a religious person.

Friday’s statement echoes one made by Bush in November 2003 during a joint press conference with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. A reporter noted Bush had frequently expressed the view that freedom is a gift from “the Almighty,” but questioned whether Bush believes “Muslims worship the same Almighty” as the president and other Christians do.

“I do say that freedom is the Almighty’s gift to every person. I also condition it by saying freedom is not America’s gift to the world,” Bush replied. “It’s much greater than that, of course. And I believe we worship the same god,” reported the London Telegraph.

Reaction from U.S. evangelical leaders was swift and strong.

Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, was quoted in the Baptist Press as saying the president “is simply mistaken.”

According to a Washington Post account, Land said in an interview: “We should always remember that he is commander in chief, not theologian in chief. The Bible is clear on this: The one and true god is Jehovah, and his only begotten son is Jesus Christ.”

The Rev. Ted Haggard, then-president of the National Association of Evangelicals, also contradicted the president in a press statement. “The Christian God encourages freedom, love, forgiveness, prosperity and health,” said Haggard. “The Muslim god appears to value the opposite. The personalities of each god are evident in the cultures, civilizations and dispositions of the peoples that serve them. Muhammad’s central message was submission; Jesus’ central message was love. They seem to be very different personalities.”

In November 2006, Haggard was forced to resign from NAE following allegations of drug use and sex with a homosexual prostitute.

Gary Bauer, former presidential candidate and president of American Values, said Bush’s comment was “not helpful to the president. Since everybody agrees he’s not a theologian, he would be much better advised to punt when he gets that kind of question.”

In Friday’s interview with Al Arabiya, Bush emphasized his outreach to Muslims.

“We are having an Iftaar dinner tonight – I say, ‘we’ – it’s my wife and I,” Bush told Nakouzi. “This is the seventh one in the seven years I’ve been the president. It gives me a chance to say ‘Ramadan Mubarak.’ The reason I do this is I want people to understand about my country. In other words, I hope this message gets out of America. I want people to understand that one of the great freedoms in America is the right for people to worship any way they see fit. If you’re a Muslim, an agnostic, a Christian, a Jew, a Hindu, you’re equally American.

“And the value – the most valuable thing I think about America is that – particularly if you’re a religious person – you can be free to worship, and it’s your choice to make. It’s not the state’s choice, and you shouldn’t be intimidated after you’ve made your choice. And that’s a right that I jealously guard.

“Secondly, I want American citizens to see me hosting an Iftaar dinner.”

“That’s a strong message for the Americans,” said Nakouzi.

Last year, WND reported criticism of Bush from Wafa Sultan, a native of Syria, who said the president was empowering terrorist leaders whose ultimate aim is for Islamic law to govern the world by proclaiming Islam a “religion of peace.”

“I believe he undermines our credibility by saying that,” said Sultan. “We came from Islam, and we know what kind of religion Islam is.”

RE: “whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God”
Someone needs to fly him over the dome of the rock which has the inscription “G-D has no son” on the top of it facing skyward. Possibly then he might come to understand that we don’t pray to the same
G-D.

RE: “And I just simply don’t subscribe to the idea that murdering innocent men, women and children – particularly Muslim men, women and children in the Middle East – is an act of somebody who is a religious person.
Why does he say “particularly muslim…”, is murdering christian men, women & children a little more understandable???

RE: “Secondly, I want American citizens to see me hosting an Iftaar dinner.”
What does he think he’s going to accomplish by having us see him hosting this dinner?? Is he trying to mock us… or G-D?? And, if he is so big on celebrating with other countries/faiths, then why didn’t he go to Israel to help them celebrate their anniversary??

I don’t know what else to say…my family & I are just so disappointed by these remarks…is this why his administration is so impotent…when he prays, does he pray in the name of Christ Jesus…if not, is this why he is not doing more to make sure our military chaplains can pray in the name of Christ Jesus…is this why he is not securing our borders ‘cuz he doesn’t see the threat…is this why he was going to let UAE control some of our ports…is this why he is pushing the NA superhighway through…is this why he is not using his executive powers to get many critical issues resolved…is this why he appointed a muslim to the UN???
It’s really a shame.

Either high profile political figures are falling all over themselves in order to be politically correct religiously or they are truly ignorant of the pagan origins of Islam. Either way, each individual , no matter their station in life, will be accountable before the LORD God of Israel.

Is this the same President that paraphrased Jesus when he said ” you are either with us or against us” after 9/11 ???????

Using a polititian to talk theology is as useful as a military using sundials to syncronize an attack, both result in chaos…kmw

It seems to me that our oval office has had a 180 degree shift in ATTITUDE, which reminds me of a writting from a renown Author.

ATTITUDE

by

Charles Swindoll

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes”

May we all pray that our country will shift it’s attitude toward the one true God, Yeshua Messiah, and continue to be lead by his Holy spirit.

Amen

Mr. Bush needs to read his Bible, and then the Q’uran, repent and stop listening to those who advise him of such nonsense.

It’s interesting to note that Obama was at the Redemption World Outreach Center in Greenville, South Carolina Sunday, professing a kingdom now theology. “”We’re going to keep on praising together. I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth.”( Whose kingdom?)

The last time I checked G_D didn’t need anyones help in creating anything. Yeshua will usher in His own kingdom when He’s ready.

Pray for both these very confused souls!

Oh, No!

I thank GOD that He has blessed me by surrounding me with good sound
teachers of the WORD(Jesus!). Thanks to HIM I have been taught the TRUTH(Jesus!).

It just goes to show you can’t trust the press and political spin.
All along we’ve been told Bush is born again. Well I’m not the head fruit inspector but I would say he is not familiar with sound biblical doctrine.

When I was born again I had a hunger for the TRUTH. I can’t believe that he thinks this way, he’s completely wrong and in the dark.
What a tragedy. I sure hope God rebukes him and leads him to the real TRUTH, Jesus! THE ONLY way to the Father.
Maybe he is saved but, he certainly has missed this basic doctrine.
I think this falls under the heading of “milk” according to Paul.

Why don’t people use common sense?
If all religions prayed to the same god, then why does one person hear “kill the infidels!” and another hear “love thy neighbor”, or “bless those that curse you”? Something is wrong with this!

The freedom to worship any god will ultimately bring this country down.
It brought Israel down in the O.T. and will do the same here.
It’s only God’s grace and mercy that holds us together until the time is right for the tribulation period.

Come quickly Lord Jesus!

It’s apparent to me that Mr. Bush is not a student of the Bible or the Islamic religion. There is a spirit of deception that leads people to say something like this. Satan would have everyone believe that the Islamic religion is peaceful but the truth is it isnt.

In the days we live in, I can’t say I’m all that surpised. I find more and more people that give that same chant. My answer to anyone that says, “Islam is a religion of peace” is this. The Koran condemns itself and the religion of Islam. The truth is written in bold black print for anyone to see if they took the time. The closer you follow the Koran, the more likely you are to blow yourself and others up.

tim sweeney says Comment posted on October 08th, 2007

I wonder if that is Bush’s diplomatic position, he can’t possibly believe that. Islam decrees the death penalty for those that worship a triune God, as in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I think that Islam is the god of war mentioned in Revelation. It certainly fits that description.

i was reading the book of lamentations this morning… (i really don’t know why; i haven’t read that book in years)

but as i was reading, i kept thinking about america, our country… and phrases just seemed to jump out at me… as if to say: this applies to america, too…

“her adversaries have become the master, her enemies prosper; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her transgressions”

“all her splendor has departed”

“the adversaries saw her and mocked at her downfall”

“(she) has sinned gravely”

“all who honored her despise her”

“she did not consider her destiny; therefore her collapse was a great wonder”

“for she has seen the heathen enter her sanctuary, those whom you commanded not to enter your assembly”

“the yoke of (her) trangressions were bound… He (God) made her strength fail; the Lord delivered her into their hands”

“for (she) rebelled against His commandment”

“all (her) enemies have heard of her trouble; they are glad that You (God) have done it”

“in our watching we watched for a nation that could not save”

(all verses taken from the gideons bible)

Amen to all your comments, I couldn’t agree more. At least this small group all seems to be on the same page. I like the Fruit inspector comment by Lance!

Bush has REACTED not ACTED during this last term, and now of course he is showing his true lukewarm spiritual position which as we all know will be Spued out!

Mat 7:17
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Rev 3:16
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Luke 11:52
Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

The word Polititian and Lawyer share the same meaning in my mind. Bottom line is, we need to pray for our country, top to bottom, or move to Australia………I won’t give up, anything is possible with the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul proved that well after the resurection and saints throughout history have continued and here we are today doing the same thing. I just hope we don’t get complacient in thinking that all we can do is pray. I hear the Lord saying “ye of little faith” in these end times. We may be a minority in our numbers on planet earth but we have the most powerful God.

Lord please give us the power and grace to save this wicked generation through your Holy Spirit, I am your vessel, use me Lord, use me.

dear kevin,

i hate to be a doomsday messenger, and i definitely agree with you that we need to pray for our country, but it occurs to me that my heart really isn’t in it… (maybe i’m not so good a christian)… when i pray for america, it’s pretty much lip service… i don’t really expect anything to change… in fact, i expect things to get worse and worse (exponentially)… my most passionate prayers are for individuals, followed by prayers for groups of individuals (such as teenagers, my family, my church, etc.)

i don’t know, maybe i have given up on america… but i don’t feel complacent; i feel passionate about reaching the lost and dying in this world because i know that time is running out… in fact, this morning i ordered some “tracts” from ray comfort (he has some really interesting and creative things)… i just love that guy!… on his answering machine message, he says: thank you for your patience, which i know you have… because it’s a fruit of the spirit… LOLOL… i just had to laugh out loud… who can be impatient after hearing that… LOL
but i digress…

anyway, praying for america is a difficult thing for me… i just don’t know what to say anymore… because i know judgement is coming (as it should… because why should america think that it would get away with her sins when israel, the apple of God’s eye, has been judged time and again)

i just pray: LORD JESUS, come quickly!

I saw this and couldn’t wait to hear the comments about it on my local Christian talk radio show. Sadly, it wasn’t even brought up. The station has consistantly backed the man as if he is a believer and just disregards anything that contradicst that belief.

What is even worse is that the host acts as if Christians have a duty to blindly follow any one that claims to be a believer. It does not bode well for our future.

The lamentations sent little chills down my spine. Good stuff.

Dear jen-o,

I hear you and agree with you as well. My most pasionate prayers are just as you say also. BTW thanks for the proper spelling of complacent!

It may seem fruitless to pray for our country at the federal level. I remember when Clinton was first elected, I was living in New Mexico and stood in line for over two hours before learing that the election was over and Clinton had won (I never had a chance to vote). Thats just the way the electoral system works. I think we are too far removed from our constituants in D.C. because they contine to do business like it was 1907 instead of 2007. Every congressmen and Senator has two offices, one at home and one in D.C., why? so all the lobbiest can simply travel to one place to influence the feds… Today we have the technology to keep our representitives at home where they belong and let the lobbiest do the traveling on their own nickle…

Perhaps your right jen-o prayers for our federal government or our Country may just be a waist of time. I would like to see my representitives here at home more often so I could get in their face and pray in person!

Thanks for the new frame of thought to add to my prayers.

jen-o, you should know that you are not alone in this. I do pray for this country and it’s leaders. Not often enough, to be sure. But I’ve felt (I really don’t like using that word when discussing this type of thing) that the prayers are not quite right. Not that praying isn’t right but perhaps we should be praying that more and more our leaders should repent. That we should repent but not for the sake of this land; regardless of what many are saying this is not Gods land. There may be many of His people living here but His land is currently being occupied by those he promised it to… I think what has happened is that we (in general) have forgotten that our Lords Kingdom is a spiritual kingdom while at the same trying to build Him an earthly one. I’m absolutely certain He doesn’t want this.

Bush not a true believer? What a newsflash. Was is the sell out to corporate crooks that woke up some blievers? The constant attacks against other countries resulting in multitudes of attrocities…including genocide against Iraqi Christians? Vulgar hand signs when off camera? Lack of compassion during Katrina? Skewing the bankruptcy laws against the poor while allowing the rich to steal without penalty? Spending our nation into unpayable debt? Allowing torture of prisoners without legal counsel for the accused? Well, this list could be very lengthy but I’ll end it here by saying, better late than never. Bush is obeying his god, Satan.

dear warren,

thank you for your encouraging words… i do get so discouraged when i see what is happening in our nation… and then i get more discouraged when i see the false prophets teaching the “all about me, prosperity, kingdom-now message” with so many people flocking to sit under their feet and send them money to spread this false gospel around the globe…
aarrgghh…

i think these false prophets do our nation more harm than the secular leaders do…

but you have given me encouragement, and now i will pray that our leaders (both secular and “religious”) will repent and turn to the Living God… this i can do… and it is a good thing to pray for… even though i do not think that it will change the overall direction our nation is headed in, it can definitely help some people along the way… and my heart goes out to those individuals, not governmental (or religious) entities…

wouldn’t it be something if one of those megachurch leaders actually repented and turned back to the Lord… oh sure, that leader would be ostracized for not going along with the current program… but he would get a real reward at the bema, AND he could influence so many people to follow him in turning back to the Lord…

i had known that something was not quite right for a while now, but couldn’t quite put my finger on it until i went into a little one room library in a little church in a little strip mall and borrowed a dvd that had jacob prasch on it… then the scales fell from my eyes (regarding these false teachers)… and i thank God for men such as these – jacob prasch, john higgins, roger oakland, and many more… that have the courage to expose the lies and false teachings that seem to abound in these last days so that people (like me) will not be swept up in this heresy…

for truly, the sheep hear HIS voice… and another will they not follow… so now it is my turn to speak what i know and share the gospel with others, warning them about these things…

again, thanks for your words of encouragement… it has been a struggle for me to pray for our nation, BUT i certainly can pray for our leaders (and our nation) to repent and turn towards the one true God!

Dave, last time I checked it was Muslims killing christians in Iraq.
By the way, Christians were killing Christians in Ireland not to long ago.

Someone had to stand up for the UN they wouldn’t do it.
War sucks! What other country did we invade other than Afganistan where we chased our enemies?

I agree with you about the problems we face but you paint it like Bush is responsible for everything. Like, what is the resoponsibility of the Mayor and Governor of Louisiana first? We all know New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen for decades. What about any previous administrations responsiblity?

Bankruptcy laws were being taken advantage of by average Americans
without a conscience or the willpower to just say “NO” I can’t afford that new HD bigscreen and all the new furniture to replace the stuff I bought last year. Run up the debt – bail on the payments.
What about the unemployment benefits wrongly paid out to people that are cheating the system. I suppose thats Bush’s fault too?

Last time I checked human beings are nasty little critters, capable of anything evil.

I think of Psalm 19:13 – Keep your servant from deliberate sins, don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.

Know any christians that have declared bankruptcy, been divorced, gotten a DUI, been with prostitutes, drug users, or hate mongers with a bad temper cussing down the crowded freeways? Are they out of the kingdom now?

I hope not. For the love of God.
Grace + Anything else and I won’t measure up that’s for sure.

bush truly believes that “all religions pray to the same ‘god’”… he has said it repeatedly, and there is no reason to doubt that he believes what he says…

imo, bush’s statements and actions are in harmony with the eumenical movement and the global “religious” agenda…

this tuesday, october 16th, bush will be meeting with the dalai lama “in secret” at the white house… later, the dalai lama will be receiving the congressional gold metal at capital hill… this medal is given out for “highest moral courage”, and bush will be attending the ceremony to “proudly witness the event”…

btw, al gore received the 2007 nobel peace prize last friday for “his efforts to spread awareness of manmade climate change and lay a foundation for counteracting it”… gore said, “we face a true planetary emergency… the climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity”…

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20071012/D8S7KOB82.html

this is why it is so hard for me to pray for these folks… they reject the Living God and turn to false religions and idols… bush has made a “god” to suit himself (all religions lead to “his god”)… gore has made a religion out of global warming… (he thinks the climate “crisis” is the biggest “spiritual” challenge that we face)…

all i can pray is: Lord open their eyes and grant them repentance…

On major Christian values Bush has done a pretty good job given the state of a hostile congress.

Being a believer does not warranty that you will be the greatest president or that you can please every single denomination in the country. I am grateful for the things he has done right and I pray the Lord will grant him discernment and repentance in the ones where he has failed.

I am in agreement with jen-o. I cannot remain silent and support someone who is spiritually misleading people. That Jesus is the only way to God is the major tenet of all Christian denominations (except possibly the Unitarians). President Bush is attempting to nix Jesus from the equation and lead people toward a one world religion.

I am amazed that some would believe he has done a good job. I will very much agree the end to late term abortions was huge. It was unconscionable how he blatantly used The Defense of Marriage Act to get re-elected. The government promotion of faith based programs could be dangerous.

Does anyone recall former President Bush’s “Points of Light” foundation? He even got Randy Travis to record the song, “Point of Light”. While I have not yet read the entire Bible, I have never found this particular phrase. However, I did find it was a phrase used by Alice Bailey (founder of Lucin Trust – originally Lucifer Publishing).

I keep thinking back to how Jesus loved the prostitutes and lepers, but despised the money changers (bankers). He also despised the Pharisees, who committed the unforgivable sin. Do you think the Pharisees could have evolved into the present day kabala (who I suspect has ties to the Illuminati and/or NWO groups)?

pot”ah”toe. We christians all know these are good old boy clubs for the rich and powerful. No doubt the enemy is at work there. Even enough to deceive the elect if possible.

I know I never would have called myself a born again believer in Christ if in fact I was not. I’m sure many of you can testify to this as well.
That raises another question. Can you lose your salvation? Not if you ever received it. God’s omnipotence holds you firmly in His grasp.
Nothing can separate you from the love of God.
(Christ dying for your sins)
Can you flounder? Well, I think we all know the answer to that…

I am suggesting that politics is a nasty game for any believer and it will only get worse as the tribulation gets closer. That way when the anti-christ comes on the scene he will really be, “the man” with a plan.

Just how is government promotion of faith based programs dangerous?
It seems like democrats wants to deny faith based programs because they might infringe on the constitution. How can one be a believer in Christ and not be happy about the governments willingness to help churches help their communities? Are there some weird churches out there? And some that take advantage? Sadly, yes. But the greater good is served here that’s for sure.

“Just how is government promotion of faith based programs dangerous?”

With the promise of dollars and gratuities, a church, pastor, congregation could be tempted to support the needs of the giver instead of the intended receiver.

We know in 2004 a lot of Christian church leaders and pastors encouraged their congregations/followers whom to vote for. Sadly, the candidate of choice has not performed as anticipated.

Lance,

These are the things that most concern me about the faith based programs:
1.) The potential it provides for the government to corrupt the ministries.
(as Pat stated above)
2.) How long before Christian ministries are excluded because they are
deemed “intolerant” because of their belief of Jesus Christ being the only
path to God.

P.S. I also loved your “fruit inspector” comment. But, we in Texas do not know the meaning of yada yada potatoe pot”ah”toe.

Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin announced yesterday that it will no longer make it’s offices available to a local “Interfaith” group that includes Muslims and Hindus. They do not want to promote the worship of other gods (with a small “g”) on their premises. How politically incorrect and how wonderfully appropriate.

more on charities….
Charities funded by the Fed. Executive Branch is more characteristic of a socialist state than a constitutional republic.

The Feds always first subsidize areas/fields they want to control. This is one reason for all the pork barrel spending (bridges to nowhere). They want to control the states, counties, and cities. A perfect example of this is playing out in Texas over the NAFTA Highway the Feds want to run through there. Our state legislature voted a two year moratorium on deciding on the NAFTA Highway because of Texans being vehemently against this. The Feds immediately let it be known that Federal funds would be cut to Texas unless the NAFTA Highway is allowed to proceed.

It is scary how much Bush is centralizing power to the Executive Branch.
